Why Self Care Is Vital For Successful Weight Loss

Why Self Care Is Vital For Successful Weight Loss

Today is World Mental Health Day. Over the last few years, there has been much more open conversation around mental health issues which is a vital first step to overcoming these challenges.

Mental health is a spectrum and not simply a case of being ‘well’ or ‘unwell’. This year has been a very challenging year and it’s important to consider and acknowledge the impact it has had on you.

Of course, if you are really struggling, it’s important to get help. Speak to someone. Anyone. There are people who can help you.

There are a number of things that we can do to look after ourselves and support our own wellbeing on a day to day basis. This is not only important for our overall health and wellness, it’s an important consideration when losing weight too.

So often I work with clients who are giving so much of themselves to work, to family, to life, that they become depleted. And the fastest way to ‘top up the tank’? Food. Seeking out comfort in chocolate, ice cream or a big bowl of pasta.

While this might feel like it’s what’s needed short term, it’s not a helpful long term strategy. Especially if you’re trying to lose weight or maintain a weight you’re happy that. (You don’t need a nutritionist to tell you that…)

Instead, integrating daily self-care practices into your routine can help you top up that tank without turning to comfort foods.

Self-care can be defined as: the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness.

On the other hand…

Self indulgence can be defined as: excessive or unrestrained gratification of one’s own appetites, desires, or whims.

It’s important to differentiate between the two.

Self-care might involve taking time out to read a book, going for a walk or stretching. It might be regular meditation, journalling or yoga. It might mean blocking out time to make home cooked meals or getting a massage. Most importantly, it should be what feels restorative for you.

Commit to self-care as a daily practice. Even if just for 20 minutes. You might be surprised at the extent to which it can positively influence your life.

Sarah has worked with hundreds of clients over the past decade to help them live in a healthy body that they feel confident in.

Sarah spent a large part of her teens and 20’s as a professional dancer battling with orthorexia and an unhealthy relationship with food and her body. This created a desire to understand the human body more so she could finally cut through the confusion and end the cycle of yoyo dieting. This fuelled her passion to help other women do the same.

Sarah specialises in supporting women who are struggling to lose weight due to underlying health issues. She’s helped many women manage their weight during and after the menopause, as well as clients with thyroid disease and immune system dysfunction. Sarah loves food and sharing healthy recipes with her clients. Her aim is to ensure that clients don’t feel deprived and instead, achieve their weight loss and health goals in a positive and sustainable way.
